Boat Delivery: Islands, Oceans and Sky

A well-seasoned yacht driver delivers a cat through the hurricane-prone summer Caribbean.

A few years ago I delivered a Lagoon 440 from San Diego, CA, to Callao, Peru, so it was not a big surprise when I received an inquiry about the delivery of a Leopard 460 to the same place – the big surprise was that this time I’d be sailing to Peru from Annapolis, MD. The yacht’s new owner did his research and gathered a number of quotes but, for a trip like this, advantages like speaking Spanish and being familiar with the make and model, route and destination, will trump other considerations.

I met with the new owners in Fort Lauderdale, FL, in late July and discussed issues like hurricane season and the Panama Canal transit. We went through the figures and schedules and after a couple of hours, we shook hands and I went home to put together a crew and pack for the trip.
