A stay-aboard mom reflects on this special catamaran lifestyle

Raising our little ones Elias, 3.5 years old, and Sebastien, 1.5 years old, on a Seawind 1160 catamaran is interesting in other people eyes and fantastic in ours. Our family is literally from different parts of the world; I’m a stay-at-home mother who was born in Florida yet grew up in Finland while my husband, who is in sales, was born and raised in Quebec, Canada. Before meeting Patrick I had never been on a sailboat. My previous “boating” experience was limited to rowing and the occasional powerboat ride with a drink in one hand. When we first met he would share stories with me from his year-long sabbatical cruising aboard a 27-foot sailboat and how he wanted to move back onto a boat one day with a family. As one can imagine, my head was buzzing with these amazing stories and the pictures of his adventures.
I personally never had my heart set on owning a house with a yard and white picket fence — I just wanted to travel and experience the world, even with children. After we got married we decided to make his wish come true, to give it a try. So, we bought Tuuli ja Meri, our Seawind 1160, and moved aboard with our 5-month-old little boy, Elias. I tried not to jump to conclusions or judgments from the first few setbacks . . .
