The connection between a 42- foot trimaran winning the Round Britain race 46 years ago and a 72-foot catamaran recently launched in Auckland could be seen as fairly remote. However, looking back, there is a sequence of events in which the tri, as first composite, set the style for offshore racing multihulls.

It is the contrast in speed and costs, which is truly amazing.

Auckland sees the launch of the A/C 72 for the next America’s cup. The America’s Cup and the Volvo Race have been described as the pinnacles of yachting.
