America’s Cup a Hit in the Pacific Northwest

A big show of support for AC 33 champs

11 April 2010: It was a great weekend for local sailing fans and the BMW ORACLE Racing team alike as the America’s Cup made an appearance in the Pacific Northwest.

On Saturday, April 10, the Cup was in Anacortes, Washington, as the team paid tribute to the town where its amazing, space-age, trimaran, USA, along with its towering wing sail, were built, by Core Builders.

The crowd in Anacortes on Saturday evening was estimated to be as big as 1,500 people by one local paper, which went on to suggest the evening was “one of the single biggest events the town has seen in recent times”.

The America’s Cup arrived at the Pier One Warehouse in a 2010 BMW 750Li and sported a new, custom-built carbon fibre base and display pedestal, both of which had been handcrafted by the Core Builders crew in Anacortes.

Kris Breckenridge, a born and bred Anacortes boat builder with Core Builders, says he was blown away by the size and enthusiasm of the crowd.

“It was really amazing to see that kind of support from the community, to see that level of enthusiasm for the America’s Cup. It’s a special night when you have everyone get behind a project that you’ve spent so much time on.”

On Sunday, the trophy was at the Seattle Yacht Club, where dozens of junior sailors had a chance to meet the team and to participate in an engaging Q+A session, before team items were auctioned off before a sold-out crowd to benefit junior sailing. Nearly $10,000 was raised.

The two stops in the Pacific Northwest follow recent USA Tour events in California after the team’s America’s Cup victory on February 14 in Valencia, Spain. The Tour is presented by Oracle and BMW EfficientDynamics.

The America’s Cup will next be on public display at the West Coast’s largest all-sail show – Strictly Sail Pacific – at the East Bay’s Jack London Square from noon until 6 pm, after which there will be a BMW ORACLE Racing team presentation from 6 to 7 pm.
